Mustang and Dolpo Treks Complete 2027 Guide

Lama 2월 12, 2025 11 min read

Trek Overview

The Mustang and Dolpo combined trek is a 25 to 32-day expedition that links two of Nepal's most remote trans-Himalayan regions through a series of high passes between 5,000 and 5,550 metres. The route starts in Upper Mustang, crosses the Sangda La into Dolpo, and ends at Juphal after visiting Shey Phoksundo Lake. It requires both the Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo restricted-area permits and is one of the most expensive and demanding treks in Nepal. Fewer than 30 trekkers a year complete the full crossing.

Why Visit

This is the only trek in Nepal that links two restricted trans-Himalayan regions in a single itinerary. You walk from the wind-sculpted caves and walled city of Lo Manthang in Mustang, across the Sangda La at 5,550 metres, and down into the turquoise lakes and Bon monasteries of Dolpo. The cultural contrast is enormous: Tibetan Buddhism in Mustang gives way to the older Bon-po tradition in Dolpo. The route crosses some of the least-visited landscape in the Himalaya. Trekkers who have done the Upper Mustang Trek or the Upper Dolpo Trek separately often return to do the combined route.

Best Time to Trek

The window is July to September, when both regions are in their dry season and the high passes are clear of snow. July is the safest month, with stable weather and the wildflowers in bloom on the Dolpo side. August is also good but afternoon thunderstorms are more frequent. September is colder but very clear. October is risky, as early snow can close the Sangda La. Avoid winter and spring entirely, as the Sangda La is sealed by snow from November to June.

Difficulty Level

This is expedition-grade trekking, suitable only for experienced high-altitude trekkers. You need previous experience above 5,000 metres, excellent fitness, and the ability to walk for 25 to 32 days in a row. The crossing of the Sangda La at 5,550 metres is the technical high point, with a long snow slope on the Dolpo side in some years. You sleep above 4,500 metres for several nights. A full support crew of guide, cook, and mules is mandatory.

Duration

Plan for 25 to 32 days on the trail, plus 6 days of travel and acclimatisation in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Nepalgunj. We suggest 28 days minimum in 2027 to allow buffer days for weather and the high passes. Shorter 25-day itineraries exist but they rush the cultural sections. Add 2 days if you want to time the start with the Tiji festival in Lo Manthang in May, though you would then start in spring snow conditions on the Sangda La.

Route Details

You start with a flight to Jomsom, then trek north through Kagbeni, Chele, and Ghiling to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Upper Mustang. From Lo Manthang you trek west to the village of Charang, then cross the Sangda La at 5,550 metres into Dolpo. The Dolpo section descends to Sangda, crosses several smaller passes, and reaches Shey Phoksundo Lake via Ringmo. From the lake you trek out to Juphal and fly to Nepalgunj.

Itinerary Overview

  • Days 1-3: Fly to Jomsom, trek to Kagbeni and Chele.
  • Days 4-7: Trek through Ghiling and Charang to Lo Manthang.
  • Days 8-9: Lo Manthang exploration and acclimatisation.
  • Days 10-13: Trek west to Yara and the Sangda La approach.
  • Day 14: Cross Sangda La (5,550 m) to Sangda.
  • Days 15-18: Trek through Dolpo to Shey Phoksundo Lake.

  • Days 27-28: Walk to Juphal, fly out.

최대 고도

The highest point is the Sangda La at 5,550 metres (18,209 feet), one of the highest trekking passes in Nepal. You reach it on day 14, after 5 days of gradual ascent from Lo Manthang at 3,840 metres. The crossing is non-technical but long, with 7 to 9 hours of walking. We carry a pulse oximeter, oxygen, and a Gamow bag. The Kang La at 5,360 metres on the Upper Dolpo circuit is the second-highest point.

Weather

Summer days on the Mustang side reach 20-25 degrees Celsius in the sun, dropping to 5 degrees at night. The Sangda La is typically just above freezing at night in July and August, with snow on the north side in some years. On the Dolpo side, daytime temperatures are 15-20 degrees and nights drop to freezing above 4,000 metres. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in August. September is cooler and clearer, with light frost at altitude.

Accommodation

You use basic tea houses in the Mustang section (Lo Manthang, Kagbeni, Charang) and camp for most of the Dolpo section. The tea houses in Mustang are simple but comfortable, with private rooms and shared bathrooms. Above Sangda and in Dolpo, camping is the rule. We provide two-person tents, foam mattresses, a dining tent, and a toilet tent. Bring your own sleeping bag rated to minus 15 degrees Celsius for the high camps.

Tea Houses

Tea houses in Upper Mustang are basic but well-run. Expect a private twin room with a thin mattress, a shared squat toilet, and a dining room with a dung-fired stove. The menu includes dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, momos, and instant noodles. Hot showers are sometimes available for $3-4. The lodges in Lo Manthang are the best in the region, with solar electricity and a few attached-bathroom rooms.

캠핑

Camping is required for most of the Dolpo section and the Sangda La approach. Our crew includes a sardar (head guide), an assistant guide, a cook, two kitchen helpers, and one muleteer per two clients. Mules carry the gear above Sangda. We use Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 tents, a separate dining tent with a butane heater, and a hand-dug latrine tent. Camp is set up before you arrive, with tea in your tent at first light.

Food

In the Mustang section, the tea houses serve dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, momos, and eggs. In the Dolpo camping section, the cook prepares porridge, eggs, chapatis, and Tibetan bread for breakfast, and noodle soup, momos, pasta, and dal bhat for dinner. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange. Above 5,000 metres appetites drop, so we keep high-energy snacks in the dining tent.

Drinking Water

You will drink three to four litres a day. In Mustang, the lodges sell boiled water for about $1.50 per litre. In the Dolpo camping section, we boil water at every meal and treat stream water with Micropur tablets. Bring a 1-litre Nalgene and a 2-litre hydration bladder. Avoid alcohol above 4,500 metres, as it worsens acclimatisation.

전기

The tea houses in Upper Mustang have solar electricity that will charge a phone for about $2 per device. Above Sangda and in Dolpo there is no mains or solar power, and the crew uses a small portable solar panel for camp lighting. Bring two 10,000 mAh power banks minimum and a small solar panel for camera use. Headlamps are mandatory.

Internet & Mobile Network

Ncell and Nepal Telecom have weak signal in Lo Manthang and Jomsom. There is no signal west of Charang or in Dolpo. We carry a Garmin inReach for emergencies, which sends short text messages via satellite. Plan to be off-grid for 20 days of the 25-day trail section. Let your family know in advance that silence is normal.

수송

You fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes) to start the trek, and fly out from Juphal to Nepalgunj (35 minutes) at the end. Both flights only operate in the morning and cancel often. We always buffer two extra days for delays. A road option from Pokhara to Jomsom is possible but takes two days. Getting from Kathmandu to Pokhara is a 25-minute flight or a 7-hour drive.

Required Permits

You need five permits for the Mustang and Dolpo combined trek in 2027: the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit ($500 for the first 10 days), the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit ($500 for the first 10 days), the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit ($30), the Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit ($30), and the TIMS Card ($17). The combined permit cost of about $1,077 is the main reason this trek is so expensive. A minimum group size of two foreigners applies. Permits are arranged by us in Kathmandu.

포장 목록

Bring a 65-litre duffel for the mules and a 30-litre daypack. Pack a three-season down jacket, a windproof shell, four base layers, two trekking trousers, a sun hat and a warm beanie, UV sunglasses, factor 50 sunscreen, a first-aid kit with Diamox, a headlamp, and trekking poles. Sleeping bag rated to minus 15 degrees Celsius. Crampons or microspikes for the Sangda La crossing in some years. Camera, spare batteries, and two power banks.

Photography Tips

Lo Manthang is best photographed in the early morning, when the walled city catches golden light against the brown hills. The Sangda La crossing is best at midday, when the sun lights both valleys. Shey Phoksundo is most photogenic between 8 and 10 a.m., with a polarising filter. The Mustang cave complexes at Chhoser work well in late afternoon side light. Keep your camera in a ziplock bag against dust, which is severe in Mustang.

Wildlife

Mustang has populations of blue sheep, kiang (Tibetan wild ass), and Himalayan griffons. The Dolpo side has the highest density of blue sheep in Nepal, with herds of 30-50 on the slopes above Saldang. Snow leopards are present in both regions but very rarely seen. Look for lammergeiers and golden eagles above the high passes. Marmots whistle from the rocks in August.

Flora

Both regions are in the rain shadow, so the vegetation is sparse trans-Himalayan steppe. Mustang has caragana bushes, wild rose, and scattered juniper. The Dolpo side has more variety, with pine and birch forest in the lower Suligad valley and alpine meadows above 4,000 metres. In August the meadows around Shey Gompa burst with blue Himalayan poppy, gentians, and edelweiss.

Local Culture

Mustang is Tibetan Buddhist, with medieval monasteries in Lo Manthang, Charang, and Ghiling that date to the 14th century. Dolpo is mixed Buddhist and Bon-po, with the older Bon tradition predating Buddhism in central Tibet. The cultural shift as you cross the Sangda La is one of the highlights of the trek. You will see prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and ancient cave dwellings throughout. The Tiji festival in Lo Manthang in May is a major cultural draw, though it falls outside the trekking window for the combined route.

Local Villages

Lo Manthang is the walled capital of Upper Mustang, with about 800 residents and four medieval monasteries. Charang has one of the oldest gompas in Mustang and a royal palace. Sangda is a tiny village on the Dolpo side of the Sangda La, with about 20 stone houses. Ringmo is a Bon village on the shore of Shey Phoksundo. Saldang is the largest village in upper Dolpo, with six monasteries and about 200 people.

Safety Tips

  • Acclimatise properly in Lo Manthang before the Sangda La approach.
  • Carry Diamox (125 mg twice daily) from 3,500 metres upwards.
  • Drink four litres of water a day; check the colour of your urine.
  • Never cross the Sangda La in bad weather; the guide makes the call at 4 a.m.
  • Keep crampons or microspikes in your daypack for the Sangda La.
  • Tell the guide immediately if you have a persistent headache or breathlessness.
  • Carry a personal Garmin inReach if trekking solo or in a pair.

Altitude Sickness Guide

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a serious risk on this trek, with multiple nights above 4,500 metres and a pass at 5,550 metres. Mild symptoms are headache, nausea, and poor sleep. Take 125 mg of Diamox twice daily, drink four litres of water, and stop climbing. If symptoms worsen to vomiting, ataxia, or breathlessness at rest, descend immediately by at least 500 metres. The only cure for severe AMS or HAPE/HACE is descent. Our guides carry a portable oxygen cylinder and a Gamow bag.

Emergency Contacts

Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA): +977 1 4440292. Simrik Air rescue (Kathmandu): +977 1 4113 222. Nepal Police emergency: 100. Keep your embassy and travel insurance 24-hour line in writing. Our office number is shared at the pre-trek briefing. Helicopter rescue from the Sangda La or upper Dolpo costs $4,000-7,000; keep a $1,000 credit card balance for deposits.

Responsible Tourism

We pay our crew above the union minimum and provide full insurance, gear, and meals on the trek. Support the local economy by buying handicrafts in Lo Manthang and Saldang, hiring local porters where possible, and donating pencils rather than sweets to children. Carry out all your rubbish, including batteries. Stick to established paths to protect the fragile alpine meadows. Do not touch or photograph monastery interiors without permission.
