Upper Mustang Trek Complete 2027 Guide

The Upper Mustang Trek is a 12 to 17-day journey into the former Buddhist kingdom of Lo, a trans-Himalayan region bordering Tibet that was closed to foreigners until 1992. The $500 restricted-area permit keeps the trail quiet.

Trek Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is a journey into the former Buddhist kingdom of Lo, a trans-Himalayan region bordering Tibet that was closed to foreigners until 1992. The route follows the Kali Gandaki river north from Kagbeni to the walled capital of Lo Manthang at 3,840 metres, passing wind-eroded cliffs, cave complexes, and medieval monasteries. Because Mustang lies in the rain shadow, the trek is walkable during the summer monsoon when most of Nepal is shut. The restricted-area permit costs $500 for the first 10 days, which keeps the trail quiet.

Why Visit

You come here for the Tibetan Buddhist culture preserved since the 14th century, the wind-sculpted landscape, and the chance to walk during the summer monsoon. The walled city of Lo Manthang has four active monasteries and a royal palace still occupied by the former king of Lo. The cave complexes at Chhoser, some still in use 500 years ago, are unlike anything else in Nepal. The Tiji festival in May is a major cultural draw, with three days of masked dance. Trekkers often pair Mustang with the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Jomsom Muktinath Trek for a longer itinerary.

Best Time to Trek

Upper Mustang is one of the few treks in Nepal you can do during the summer monsoon (June to August), because it sits in the rain shadow. Spring (March to May) brings warm days and the Tiji festival in Lo Manthang. Summer (June to August) is the most popular time, with dry weather and the wildflowers in bloom. Autumn (September to November) is cooler and very clear. Winter (December to February) is cold but possible at lower altitudes if you do not mind short days.

Difficulty Level

This is a challenging trek but not technical. You walk 5 to 6 hours a day on a well-marked trail at altitudes between 2,800 and 4,200 metres. The maximum altitude of 4,200 metres is moderate, so altitude sickness is less of a risk than on the Everest or Manaslu circuits. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential. The main challenges are the long days, the wind in the afternoons, and the basic tea-house conditions.

Duration

Plan for 12 to 17 days, including the flight to Jomsom. The standard itinerary is 14 to 15 days, with 11 days of trekking and 3 days of travel and acclimatisation. Shorter 12-day itineraries rush the cultural sections. Add 2 days if you want to extend to the cave complex at Chhoser or the Lo Gekar monastery. We suggest 15 days minimum in 2027 to allow buffer days for the Jomsom flight.

Route Details

You fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, then trek north through Kagbeni, Chele, and Ghiling to Lo Manthang. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki river, the deepest gorge in the world, climbing gradually through wind-eroded cliffs and red rock canyons. After two nights in Lo Manthang with day trips to Chhoser and Lo Gekar, you retrace the same trail back to Jomsom, or take a higher eastern route via Ghar Gompa and Drakmar for variety.

Itinerary Overview

  • Day 1: Fly Pokhara to Jomsom, trek to Kagbeni.
  • Days 2-5: Trek through Chele, Ghiling, and Charang to Lo Manthang.
  • Days 6-7: Lo Manthang exploration and day trips to Chhoser.
  • Days 8-11: Return via Drakmar and Ghar Gompa, or retrace.
  • Days 12-13: Trek to Jomsom.
  • Day 14: Fly to Pokhara.

최대 고도

The highest sleeping point on the standard route is Lo Manthang at 3,840 metres (12,600 feet). The highest day-trip point is the Chhoser cave complex at 4,200 metres (13,780 feet). Altitude sickness is rare at these elevations, but you should still ascend gradually and drink plenty of water. We carry a pulse oximeter and check oxygen levels in Lo Manthang. The eastern return route crosses the Chogo La at 4,325 metres.

Weather

Spring days reach 18-22 degrees Celsius, dropping to 5 degrees at night. Summer is warmer, with daytime highs of 22-26 and night-time lows around 8. Autumn is cooler and clearer, with crisp days of 15-18 degrees and frosty nights. Winter is cold, with daytime highs of 8-12 and nights dropping to minus 10 in Lo Manthang. Wind is the main hazard, with strong afternoon gusts common in the Kali Gandaki valley.

Accommodation

You stay in tea houses for the entire route. The lodges in Kagbeni, Chele, Ghiling, Charang, and Lo Manthang are simple but comfortable, with private twin rooms and shared bathrooms. The best lodges in Lo Manthang have solar electricity and a few attached-bathroom rooms. Rooms have twin beds with thin mattresses and blankets, but bring your own sleeping bag for warmth. There is no heating in the bedrooms.

Tea Houses

The tea houses in Upper Mustang are well-run by Nepali standards. The menu includes dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, momos, instant noodles, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Hot showers are sometimes available for $3-4. The dining room has a dung-fired stove in the evening, which is the social centre of the lodge. The lodges in Lo Manthang are the best in the region, with solar electricity and Wi-Fi in some.

캠핑

This trek uses tea-house lodging; camping is not typically required. The route has enough village lodges to cover every night. If you prefer a private camp at one of the more remote stops, we can arrange it for an additional cost with a small crew of guide, cook, and porter. Most trekkers find the lodges comfortable enough.

Food

The lodge menu is simple but filling. Breakfast is porridge, eggs, Tibetan bread, and chapati with jam. Lunch is usually fried rice, noodles, or momos. Dinner is dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry), or pasta with tomato sauce. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange. The apples in Marpha and Jomsom, on the way in and out, are some of the best in Nepal.

Drinking Water

The lodges sell boiled water for about $1.50 per litre, or you can treat tap water with Micropur tablets or a Steripen. The Kali Gandaki river water is not safe to drink untreated below the villages, but the spring water above Kagbeni is generally clean. Plan to drink three litres a day. Bring two 1-litre Nalgene bottles.

전기

The lodges in Upper Mustang have solar electricity that will charge a phone for about $2 per device. Power is limited, so charge devices during the day when the sun is on the panels. The lodges in Lo Manthang have more reliable power than the smaller villages. Bring a 10,000 mAh power bank as backup. Headlamps are mandatory for evening use.

Internet & Mobile Network

Ncell and Nepal Telecom have weak signal in Jomsom, Kagbeni, and Lo Manthang. The signal is patchy or absent in the smaller villages. Some lodges in Lo Manthang offer Wi-Fi for $3-5 per day. We carry a Garmin inReach for emergencies. Plan to be partly off-grid for the 11 days of trekking.

수송

You fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (20 minutes) to start the trek, and fly back the same way at the end. The Jomsom flight only operates in the morning and cancels often due to wind in the Kali Gandaki valley. We always buffer one extra day for delays. A road option from Pokhara to Jomsom is possible but takes two days on a rough jeep track. Getting from Kathmandu to Pokhara is a 25-minute flight or a 7-hour drive.

Required Permits

You need three permits for the Upper Mustang Trek in 2027: the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit ($500 per person for the first 10 days, $50 per day after), the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit ($30), and the TIMS Card ($17). The $500 permit is the main cost driver and the main reason the trail stays quiet. Permits are arranged by us in Kathmandu and require your original passport and four passport photos. A minimum group size of two foreigners applies.

포장 목록

Bring a 40-litre daypack if you use a porter, or a 60-litre duffel if you carry your own gear. Pack a three-season down jacket, a windproof shell (essential for the Kali Gandaki wind), three base layers, two trekking trousers, a sun hat and a warm beanie, UV sunglasses, factor 50 sunscreen, a first-aid kit with Diamox, a headlamp, and trekking poles. Sleeping bag rated to minus 5 degrees Celsius. A buff or scarf to cover your face from dust.

Photography Tips

Lo Manthang is best photographed in the early morning, when the walled city catches golden light against the brown hills. The wind-eroded cliffs between Chele and Ghiling are best at midday for full sun. The cave complexes at Chhoser work well in late afternoon side light. A polarising filter helps cut the haze and bring out the red rock. Keep your camera in a ziplock bag against dust, which is severe in the afternoon.

Wildlife

Mustang has populations of blue sheep (bharal) on the higher slopes, often in herds of 10-30. Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) are occasionally seen on the high plateaus near Lo Manthang. Himalayan griffons and lammergeiers circle above the cliffs. Look for Himalayan snowcocks on the high ridges. Snow leopards are present but very rarely seen.

Flora

Mustang is in the rain shadow, so the vegetation is sparse trans-Himalayan steppe. The lower Kali Gandaki valley has pine and juniper forest up to about 3,200 metres. Above the tree line you walk through caragana bushes, wild rose, and scattered juniper. In summer the meadows around Lo Manthang bloom with gentians, edelweiss, and wild onion. Apple orchards in Marpha and Jomsom are a major local crop.

Local Culture

The people of Upper Mustang are of Tibetan origin and practice Tibetan Buddhism. The walled city of Lo Manthang has four active monasteries and a royal palace still occupied by the former king of Lo. The Tiji festival in May is a three-day masked dance that celebrates the victory of good over evil. Villages are built of flat-roofed stone and mud, with separate winter and summer houses. You will see prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens throughout.

Local Villages

Lo Manthang is the walled capital of Upper Mustang, with about 800 residents, four monasteries, and a royal palace. Kagbeni is the gateway village at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers. Charang has one of the oldest gompas in Mustang and a royal palace. Ghiling is a small farming village with a 14th-century monastery. Chhoser is the village above the cave complex, with a cliff-side monastery.

Safety Tips

  • Acclimatise gradually in Kagbeni before the climb to Lo Manthang.
  • Carry Diamox (125 mg twice daily) from 3,000 metres upwards.
  • Drink three litres of water a day; the dry air dehydrates you fast.
  • Protect your camera and electronics from dust with ziplock bags.
  • Carry a buff or scarf to cover your face from afternoon wind.
  • Tell the guide if you have a persistent headache or shortness of breath.

Altitude Sickness Guide

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is rare on this trek because the maximum altitude is moderate (4,200 m). Mild symptoms are headache, nausea, and poor sleep. Take 125 mg of Diamox twice daily, drink three litres of water, and rest. If symptoms worsen to vomiting or breathlessness at rest, descend to Kagbeni at 2,800 metres. The only cure for severe AMS is descent. Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and a basic first-aid kit.

Keep your embassy and travel insurance 24-hour line in writing. Helicopter rescue from Lo Manthang costs $2,500-4,000.

Responsible Tourism

We pay our crew above the union minimum and provide full insurance and gear. Support the local economy by buying handicrafts in Lo Manthang, hiring local porters where possible, and donating pencils rather than sweets to children. Carry out all your rubbish, including batteries. Stick to established paths to protect the fragile trans-Himalayan steppe. Do not touch or photograph monastery interiors without permission, and walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls.
