Mundum Trail Complete 2027 Guide

The Mundum Trail is a new 8 to 12-day trekking route in eastern Nepal following the sacred ridge that the Kirati people believe is the path of their ancestors' souls. It is the first trek in Nepal developed to showcase Kirati culture and the Mundum animist religion.

Trek Overview

The Mundum Trail is a new trekking route in eastern Nepal following the sacred ridge that the Kirati people believe is the path of their ancestors' souls. The route runs along the ridge between Khotang and Bhojpur districts, reaching 4,200 metres at the Salpa Pokhari lake. It is the first trekking route in Nepal developed specifically to showcase Kirati culture, with its distinct Mundum animist religion. The total distance is about 75 kilometres, walkable in 8 to 12 days from Diktel or Bhojpur.

Why Visit

You come here for the Kirati culture, the ridge walking, and the silence of a route that sees fewer than 100 foreign trekkers a year. The Mundum is the ancestral religion of the Kirati people, predating both Hinduism and Buddhism in eastern Nepal, and you will see shamans (Dhami) performing rituals along the ridge. The Salpa Pokhari lake at 4,200 metres is sacred to both Kirati and Hindu pilgrims, with a festival each August. The ridge walking, with views from Makalu to Kanchenjunga, is among the best in east Nepal. Trekkers often combine this route with the Pikey Peak Trek or the Milke Danda Trek for a longer eastern Nepal itinerary.

Best Time to Trek

The best months are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring brings rhododendron blooms on the ridge and clear mornings with views of Makalu and Kanchenjunga. Autumn is cooler and clearer, with crisp light and stable weather. August is the time to come if you want to experience the Salpa Pokhari festival, though the weather is wet. Winter (December to February) is cold but possible at lower altitudes; the ridge above 3,500 metres gets snow. Summer (June to August) is wet and leech-infested below 2,500 metres.

Difficulty Level

This is a moderate trek, suitable for fit walkers with some previous trekking experience. The maximum altitude of 4,200 metres is moderate, so altitude sickness is a small risk. You walk 5 to 6 hours a day on a newly marked trail with significant ridge ascent and descent. The ridge walking is non-technical but exposed, with strong winds in the afternoon. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential.

Duration

Plan for 8 to 12 days, including 1 to 2 days of travel each way from Biratnagar. The standard itinerary is 10 days, with 8 days of trekking and 2 days of travel. Shorter 8-day itineraries rush the ridge section. Add 2 days if you want to combine with the Milke Danda Trek for the rhododendron ridge to the north.

Route Details

You fly from Biratnagar to Bhojpur or drive to Diktel, then trek along the Mundum ridge through Kirati villages to the Salpa Pokhari lake at 4,200 metres. The ridge runs east to west between Khotang and Bhojpur districts, with views from Makalu to Kanchenjunga on a clear day. From the lake you descend through the same villages or continue west to Diktel, and drive back to Biratnagar. The total circuit is about 75 kilometres.

Itinerary Overview

  • Day 1: Fly Biratnagar to Bhojpur or drive to Diktel.
  • Days 2-4: Trek along the Mundum ridge through Kirati villages.
  • Days 5-6: Trek to the Salpa Pokhari approach.
  • Day 7: Trek to Salpa Pokhari (4,200 m).
  • Day 8: Sunrise at the lake, descend to Diktel.
  • Days 9-10: Drive or fly to Biratnagar and Kathmandu.

최대 고도

The highest point is the Salpa Pokhari lake at 4,200 metres (13,780 feet), with the ridge above the lake reaching 4,250 metres. You reach this altitude gradually over 6 days from Bhojpur at 1,600 metres. Altitude sickness is rare at these elevations, but you should still ascend gradually and drink plenty of water. We carry a pulse oximeter and check oxygen levels at the approach camp.

Weather

Spring days reach 15-20 degrees Celsius on the ridge, dropping to 5 degrees at night above 3,000 metres. At the lake, daytime highs are 8-12 degrees and nights fall to freezing. Autumn is cooler, with daytime highs of 10-15 and nights dropping to freezing at altitude. Winter is cold, with daytime highs of 5-10 and nights dropping to minus 10 on the ridge. The ridge is exposed to wind, so a windproof shell is essential.

Accommodation

You stay in basic village homestays and tea houses for the entire route. The homestays in the Kirati villages are simple family homes, with a private room and shared bathroom. Meals are taken with the family. The accommodation is basic but clean, and the family interaction is a highlight of the trek. Some villages have small purpose-built lodges for trekkers, as the route is being developed for tourism.

Tea Houses

The tea houses and homestays on this route are basic. Expect a wooden bed with a thin mattress, a shared squat toilet, and a central stove fired with wood in the dining room. The menu is limited to dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, and instant noodles. Hot showers are not available. Bring your own sleeping bag for warmth, as bedrooms are unheated.

캠핑

This trek uses homestay and tea-house lodging; camping is not typically required. The route has enough village accommodation to cover every night. If you prefer a private camp near Salpa Pokhari, we can arrange it for an additional cost with a small crew of guide, cook, and porter. Most trekkers find the homestays comfortable enough.

Food

In the homestays, meals are taken with the family and usually consist of dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry), with seasonal vegetables from the garden. The tea houses serve dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, momos, and instant noodles. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange. The local Kirati cuisine includes tungba (fermented millet beer) and kinema (fermented soybean), both worth trying. Bring your own snacks for the lake day.

Drinking Water

The homestays and tea houses sell boiled water for about $1 per litre, or you can treat stream water with Micropur tablets or a Steripen. The spring water on the ridge is generally clean, but we treat it as a precaution. Plan to drink three litres a day. Bring two 1-litre Nalgene bottles.

전기

The villages below 2,000 metres have mains electricity. Above that, the homestays use small solar setups that will charge a phone for about $1 per device. Power is limited, so charge devices during the day. Bring a 10,000 mAh power bank as backup. Headlamps are mandatory for evening use.

Internet & Mobile Network

Ncell and Nepal Telecom have weak signal in the lower villages below 2,000 metres. The signal is patchy or absent above that, especially on the ridge. We carry a Garmin inReach for emergencies. Plan to be partly off-grid for the 8 days of trekking. Let your family know in advance.

수송

You fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar (45 minutes), then either fly to Bhojpur (20 minutes) or drive to Diktel (8-10 hours by jeep). The road to Diktel is rough but passable year-round. On the way out, you drive from Diktel to Biratnagar (8-10 hours) or fly from Bhojpur. We recommend the flights where possible, as the drive is long.

Required Permits

You need only the TIMS Card ($17) for the Mundum Trail in 2027. No restricted-area permit or national park permit is required, which makes this one of the cheapest treks in Nepal. Permits are arranged by us in Kathmandu and require your original passport and two passport photos. Solo trekking is allowed.

포장 목록

Bring a 40-litre daypack if you use a porter, or a 60-litre duffel if you carry your own gear. Pack a three-season down jacket, a windproof shell (essential for the ridge), three base layers, two trekking trousers, a sun hat and a warm beanie, UV sunglasses, factor 50 sunscreen, a first-aid kit with Diamox, a headlamp, and trekking poles. Sleeping bag rated to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Camera, spare batteries, and a power bank.

Photography Tips

The ridge walking is best photographed in the early morning, when the first light hits Makalu and Kanchenjunga to the east and north. The Kirati villages of the ridge work well in the late afternoon, with stone houses catching warm side light. The Salpa Pokhari lake is most photogenic at sunrise, with the ridge reflected in the water. The Kirati Dhami (shaman) rituals are a unique cultural subject; ask before photographing. Bring a wide-angle for the ridge and a portrait lens for the villages.

Wildlife

The lower forests have langur monkeys, barking deer, and wild boar. Above 3,000 metres you may see Himalayan tahr and musk deer on the slopes. The region is home to the red panda, though sightings are very rare. Himalayan griffons and lammergeiers circle above the ridge. Look for monal pheasants in the rhododendron forest in spring.

Flora

The lower valleys have subtropical forest with sal, chir pine, and rhododendron up to 2,500 metres. The middle zone has oak, maple, and magnolia forest up to 3,500 metres. Spring brings spectacular rhododendron blooms on the ridge, with red, pink, and white flowers. Above the tree line you walk through alpine meadows with juniper, caragana, and gentian. The Milke Danda ridge to the north is known as the rhododendron capital of Nepal.

Local Culture

The Mundum Trail is the first trek in Nepal developed specifically to showcase Kirati culture. The Kirati are an indigenous group of eastern Nepal with their own animist religion, the Mundum, which predates both Hinduism and Buddhism in the region. The Mundum is the path of the ancestors' souls, and the ridge is sacred. You will see Dhami (shamans) performing rituals, especially at the Salpa Pokhari festival in August. The Kirati language, Mundari, is a Tibeto-Burman language distinct from Nepali. Villages are built of stone with wooden balconies, and you will see the traditional chulho (fire pit) in every home.

Local Villages

Diktel is the trailhead, the headquarters of Khotang district, with a small bazaar and a hospital. Bhojpur is the alternative trailhead, a larger town famous for its traditional khukuri (Gurkha knife) makers. The Kirati villages along the ridge include Chhintang, Halesi, and Bahunidanda, each with a small shrine or Dhami. Salpa Pokhari is a seasonal settlement of pilgrim shelters at 4,200 metres. The route passes through more than 20 small villages on the ridge.

Safety Tips

  • Acclimatise properly: spend a night at the approach camp before the lake.
  • Carry Diamox (125 mg twice daily) from 3,500 metres upwards.
  • Drink three litres of water a day; check the colour of your urine.
  • Be cautious on the ridge in wind; it is exposed with no shelter.
  • Keep your down jacket, hat, and gloves in your daypack for the ridge.
  • Tell the guide if you have a persistent headache or shortness of breath.

Altitude Sickness Guide

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a small risk on this trek, with a maximum altitude of 4,200 metres. Mild symptoms are headache, nausea, and poor sleep. Take 125 mg of Diamox twice daily, drink three litres of water, and rest. If symptoms worsen to vomiting or breathlessness at rest, descend to the nearest village at 2,500 metres. The only cure for severe AMS is descent. Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and a basic first-aid kit.

Emergency Contacts

Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA): +977 1 4440292. Simrik Air rescue (Kathmandu): +977 1 4113 222. Nepal Police emergency: 100. The nearest health post is in Diktel. Keep your embassy and travel insurance 24-hour line in writing. Helicopter rescue from the Mundum ridge costs $2,500-4,000.

Responsible Tourism

We pay our crew above the union minimum and provide full insurance and gear. Support the local economy by buying handicrafts in the villages, hiring local porters where possible, and donating pencils rather than sweets to children. Carry out all your rubbish, including batteries. Stick to established paths to protect the fragile alpine meadows. Ask permission before photographing Dhami rituals, and respect the sacred nature of the Salpa Pokhari lake.
