Kusum Kanguru (6,367m / 20,889 ft) is a trekking peak in the Khumbu region of north-east Nepal, located immediately south of 卢克拉 above the Dudh Koshi valley. The peak lies at approximately 27 degrees 42 minutes north latitude and 86 degrees 44 minutes east longitude, in the Sagarmatha National Park. The name Kusum Kanguru means Three Snow Gods in the Sherpa language, referring to the triple summit that gives the mountain its distinctive shape. Kusum Kanguru was first climbed on 9 October 1981 by a joint Nepali-Japanese expedition via the south face. The Nepal Mountaineering Association classifies it as a Group A trekking peak, but it is one of the most technically demanding trekking peaks in Nepal. The standard route climbs the south face, with Base Camp at approximately 4,800m above the village of Chhuthang and a High Camp at around 5,400m. The summit push involves sustained rock, snow, and ice climbing on the upper mountain, with 50-70 degree ice slopes and vertical rock steps that require fixed ropes. The technical difficulty is rated D+ on the Alpine grading system, similar to lower-grade expeditions. Climbers should have previous mountaineering experience including ice climbing, rock climbing, and the ability to ascend fixed ropes confidently.Kusum Kanguru is one of the most technically demanding trekking peaks in Nepal, with sustained mixed climbing on the upper mountain. The triple summit ridge is exposed and corniced in places, requiring careful route selection by the climbing Sherpa. The mountain is rarely climbed due to its technical nature – only a handful of expeditions attempt it each year. The summit rewards climbers with views of Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Thamserku (6,623m), and the entire Khumbu range. The approach is one of the shortest of any Khumbu climbing peak, starting directly from Lukla with a 2-day trek to Base Camp. The region is culturally Tibetan Buddhist Sherpa homeland, with traditional villages, ancient monasteries, and prayer walls along the trail. The best climbing seasons are spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November). Kusum Kanguru is for serious climbers seeking a true technical challenge on one of Nepal least-climbed trekking peaks.
