The Walungchung Gola Trek is a 16-day cultural trek to one of the oldest and least-visited Sherpa settlements in eastern Nepal. Walungchung Gola sits at 3,200m on a high terrace above the Tamor river, and its people are believed to be among the first Sherpa migrants from Tibet more than 500 years ago. The village retains its traditional stone architecture, a 400-year-old monastery, and a way of life centered on yak herding and trade with Tibet. The trek begins at Taplejung and climbs through Limbu and Sherpa country to reach Walungchung Gola, with options to extend to the Lumba Sumba Pass for high-altitude adventure. This is a true off-the-beaten-path experience for travelers wanting deep cultural immersion in a place few foreigners have ever reached.
