Trek Overview
The Langtang Valley Trek is the closest 4,000-metre walk to Kathmandu, and you can be on the trail by lunchtime. The route climbs the Langtang river valley from Syabrubesi to the village of Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 metres, flanked by Langtang Lirung at 7,227 metres. The valley passes through Tamang and Tibetan villages that were heavily affected by the 2015 earthquake and have since rebuilt. A working yak cheese factory at Kyanjin and a climb of Kyanjin Ri at 4,984 metres round out a trek that is short, scenic, and culturally rich.
Why Visit
You come to Langtang for the proximity and the value. No domestic flight is needed; a single jeep ride from Kathmandu puts you on the trail. The valley is glaciated, with Langtang Lirung looming overhead and yak pastures along the river. The Tamang and Tibetan culture is distinct from the Sherpa and Gurung cultures you meet on the Everest and Annapurna treks. The Kyanjin cheese factory, founded by Swiss aid in the 1950s, is a unique stop.
Best Time to Trek
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the clearest seasons. Winter (December to February) is cold but workable, with snow possible above Kyanjin. Monsoon (June to August) brings greenery, leeches, and limited mountain views, but the trail is walkable. For 2027 spring departures, book by January as lodges fill up in peak October.
Difficulty Level
We rate this trek Moderate. You walk 5 to 6 hours a day on well-built trail, with one long climb to Kyanjin Ri if you add it. The maximum altitude of 4,984 metres is the main challenge, but you sleep at 3,870 metres at Kyanjin. No technical gear is needed. A reasonably fit walker who hikes monthly will manage this comfortably.
Duration
Plan 7 to 11 days from Kathmandu, including drive days. The shorter 7-day version goes straight up and down the valley. The 11-day version adds Kyanjin Ri, Tserko Ri, and an acclimatisation day. We recommend 9 days for most clients, with two acclimatisation days.
Route Details
The route starts at Syabrubesi, a 7-hour jeep ride from Kathmandu, and climbs the Langtang river through Bamboo, Lama Hotel, and Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa. The rebuilt Langtang village sits in a wide glacial valley, with the 2015 avalanche path visible above. From Kyanjin you can climb Kyanjin Ri at 4,984 metres for a 360-degree panorama. The return follows the same trail back to Syabrubesi.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Day 2: Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. Day 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang village. Day 4: Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa. Day 5: acclimatisation in Kyanjin, visit cheese factory and monastery. Day 6: climb Kyanjin Ri (4,984 m), return to Kyanjin. Day 7: Kyanjin to Lama Hotel. Day 8: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi. Day 9: drive to Kathmandu. The 11-day version adds Tserko Ri and an extra rest day.
최대 고도
The highest point is Kyanjin Ri at 4,984 metres (16,352 feet), climbed as a day hike from Kyanjin Gompa. You sleep at Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 metres for two nights, which lets your body adjust. The climb to Kyanjin Ri is 1,100 metres over about 3 hours, with no technical difficulty. The optional Tserko Ri reaches 4,984 metres on a longer day hike.
Weather
Daytime temperatures run 10 to 18 degrees Celsius in the valley in spring and autumn, dropping to minus 5 at night at Kyanjin. Winter is colder, with snow often covering Kyanjin Ri from December to March. Monsoon brings rain and cloud but also lush greenery. Carry a down jacket and a three-season sleeping bag.
Accommodation
You sleep in family-run tea houses with twin beds, foam mattresses, and shared bathrooms. The lodges at Kyanjin are the best on the route, with attached hot showers at some. Langtang village lodges were rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake and are comfortable. Bring a three-season sleeping bag for the cold nights.
Tea Houses
Tea houses on the Langtang route are well-run, with solar lighting and reliable charging at most stops. The Kyanjin lodges have bakeries serving fresh bread, apple pie, and yak cheese from the local factory. Hot showers are available at most lodges for a small fee. Bed rates run $5 to $8 if you eat dinner at the lodge.
캠핑
This trek uses tea-house lodging; camping is not typically required.
Food
Food is better than on most Nepal treks, with the Kyanjin bakeries a real highlight. Expect dal bhat, Tibetan bread, yak cheese (from the local factory), apple pie, and Tibetan dumplings. The Kyanjin lodges also serve yak steak and yak cheese pizza. Carry snacks from Kathmandu, as the trail shops are limited above Bamboo.
Drinking Water
Tap and stream water is available but must be treated. We carry a SteriPen and iodine tablets, with a filter as backup. Boiled water is sold at lodges for $1 to $2 per litre. Plan for 3 litres a day, more on the Kyanjin Ri climb. Avoid the river water below Langtang village, which can be contaminated.
전기
Most lodges have grid or micro-hydro power up to Langtang village; Kyanjin runs on solar and generator. Charging a phone or camera costs $1 to $3 per device. Bring a power bank for backup. Kyanjin Gompa has reliable power in the evening when the generator runs.
Internet & Mobile Network
Ncell and Nepal Telecom work intermittently up to Lama Hotel, then drop out above. Some Kyanjin lodges now offer paid Wi-Fi. Buy a data pack in Kathmandu and download maps before you start. Treat the upper valley as a partial digital detox.
수송
The trailhead at Syabrubesi is a 7-hour jeep ride from Kathmandu on a rough road. We arrange private 4WD jeeps for our groups at $100 to $150 one way. Public buses run for $5 but take 9 hours and are crowded. The return is the same in reverse. No domestic flight is needed for this trek.
Required Permits
You need two permits: the Langtang National Park Entry Permit at about $30 and the TIMS Card at $20. We arrange both in Kathmandu before departure. Bring four passport photos and your passport. No restricted-area permit is needed for this route.
포장 목록
Pack a three-season sleeping bag, a down jacket, and three layers of trekking clothing. Sturdy waterproof boots with good ankle support are essential for the rocky trail. Carry a 30-litre day pack, trekking poles, a headlamp, and a basic first-aid kit. Bring a power bank and a wide-brim hat for the sunny valley.

This is one of the best-value high-altitude treks in Nepal, with no flights and easy logistics. Solo trekkers pay more for the guide.
Photography Tips
Shoot Langtang Lirung from Kyanjin Gompa in the early morning, when the peak catches first light. The yak pastures and prayer flags make strong foregrounds. The Kyanjin Ri summit panorama is the big vista; arrive before 9am for clear air. The 2015 avalanche scar above Langtang village is a sobering photograph.
Wildlife
Langtang National Park holds red pandas in the bamboo forest, though sightings are very rare. You will see langurs, Himalayan tahr, and danphe (the national bird of Nepal) on the upper trail. The river valley has otters in places. Keep distance, and never feed the animals.
Flora
The trail climbs from subtropical forest at Syabrubesi through bamboo and rhododendron to alpine meadow at Kyanjin. Spring brings rhododendron flowers and red panda habitat on the lower trail. Above 3,800 metres the vegetation thins to juniper, alpine grasses, and cushion plants. Blue poppies bloom near Kyanjin Ri in late summer.
Local Culture
The Tamang people are the dominant ethnic group, with their own language, shamanic traditions, and a culture that blends Bon, Buddhism, and Hinduism. The 2015 earthquake and avalanche devastated Langtang village, killing about 300 people; the rebuilt village is a testament to community resilience. The Kyanjin Gompa monastery is the spiritual centre of the valley. Ask before photographing people, especially older villagers who lost family in 2015.
Local Villages
Lama Hotel is a small cluster of lodges in the forest. Langtang village is the main settlement, rebuilt after 2015 with new stone houses and a memorial stupa. Kyanjin Gompa is a tiny village of lodges, monastery, and the cheese factory. Syabrubesi at the trailhead is a busy road-head town with shops and bakeries.
Safety Tips
Carry a tested first-aid kit including diamox, ibuprofen, and rehydration salts. Trek with a licensed guide who knows the weather signs. Do not push past symptoms of altitude sickness; descend if you have a headache that does not respond to fluids. The 2015 avalanche path above Langtang village is unstable in heavy rain; do not linger there.
Altitude Sickness Guide
You sleep at 3,870 metres at Kyanjin and climb to 4,984 metres on Kyanjin Ri. Mild AMS is possible at Kyanjin, especially if you ascend quickly. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, avoid alcohol, and consider diamox 125mg twice daily from Lama Hotel. If symptoms worsen, descend to Langtang village or lower. The optional Tserko Ri should only be attempted if you are well-acclimatised.
Emergency Contacts
Keep these numbers on paper and on your phone: local police 100, tourist police in Kathmandu 4216330, and the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic in Kyangjin (open in season). Your travel insurance must cover helicopter evacuation above 4,000 metres. Carry your insurance policy number and emergency phone in your day pack. Your guide carries a mobile phone with the best local SIM.
Responsible Tourism
The 2015 earthquake hit Langtang hard, and your trek directly supports the rebuilt villages. Carry out all rubbish, including wrappers and batteries. Refill water bottles rather than buying plastic. Dress modestly in villages, especially near the monastery. The cheese factory is a community enterprise; buy yak cheese to support it. Tip guides and porters around 10 percent of the trek cost.
