History

According to Buddhist texts, after the Buddha’s cremation in 483 BC his relics were divided into eight portions for eight kingdoms. The Koliya kingdom of Ramagrama built a stupa over their share. Emperor Ashoka opened seven of the eight relic stupas in the 3rd century BC to redistribute the relics, but spared Ramagrama — possibly out of reverence or because it was protected by a serpent deity. Ramagrama is the only one of the original eight relic stupas that remains unopened, making it uniquely sacred to Buddhists.
