Быстрый ответ

The South Base Camp trek reaches Yalung Bar at 4,740 m in 14 to 18 days, while the North reaches Pangpema at 5,143 m in 16 to 20 days. South is shorter, slightly less demanding, and focuses on the south face and Jannu wall. North is higher, has closer glacier contact, and is the standard choice for combining with the Sele La crossing to make the full circuit.

подробная разбив

Both routes start from Taplejung and use the same Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and restricted-area permits. They diverge at Amjilosa where the trail splits. South climbs through the Simbua Khola valley to Yalung Bar and the Ramche meadow camp. North climbs through the Ghunsa valley to Kambachen and on to Pangpema on the Kanchenjunga glacier.

Scenery differs. The south route offers the dramatic Jannu wall at 7,710 m, the south face of Kanchenjunga at 8,586 m, and the Yalung glacier basin. The north route offers the Kanchenjunga glacier, the twin peaks of Nepal Peak, and a closer view of the north face.

Difficulty is comparable. Both cross 4,000 m passes. South has the Sele La at 4,290 m and Sinion La at 4,660 m on the circuit option. North has the Lapsang La at 5,160 m only on the full circuit, otherwise stays below 5,200 m at Pangpema.

Что влияет на ответ

Trip length matters most. South in 14 days suits trekkers with two weeks of leave. North needs at least 16 days and the full circuit with Sele La needs 22 to 28 days.

Season shifts scenery. Spring from March to May has rhododendron bloom below 3,500 m on both routes. Autumn from October to November has clearest mountain views. North gets colder earlier in autumn because Pangpema is 400 m higher than Yalung.

Acclimatization profile differs. South climbs gradually from 1,800 m at Taplejung to 4,740 m over 8 days. North has a sharper jump from Ghunsa at 3,400 m to Kambachen at 4,050 m to Lhonak at 4,780 m to Pangpema at 5,143 m in 4 days, requiring an extra rest day at Kambachen.

Советы по бронированию

Book through a Taplejung or Bhadrapur-based operator. They arrange the 22-hour bus or the USD 220 round-trip flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and the jeep to Taplejung. Kathmandu agencies charge 15 to 20 percent more.

Reserve the Bhadrapur flight 60 days ahead for spring and autumn. Seats in March, April, October, and November sell out by mid season.

Carry USD 200 cash for emergency evacuations from either base camp. Heli rescue from Pangpema costs USD 2,800 to USD 3,500. From Yalung it costs USD 2,200 to USD 2,800.

Сравнение с альтернативами

Compared with the full Kanchenjunga Circuit, doing only south or only north is 8 to 10 days shorter and USD 600 to USD 1,000 cheaper. The circuit adds the Sele La and Lapsang La crossings which are weather-dependent.

Compared with Everest Base Camp, both Kanchenjunga routes are 5 to 8 days longer, USD 500 to USD 800 more expensive, and see 90 percent fewer trekkers. EBC has lodges every 2 hours; Kanchenjunga has lodges every 4 to 6 hours.

Compared with Annapurna Circuit, Kanchenjunga routes are more remote and higher altitude but with thinner infrastructure. Annapurna has road access at multiple points; Kanchenjunga has only Taplejung.

Распространенные ошибки, которых следует избегать

Choosing south because it sounds easier. South still crosses 4,660 m Sinion La on the circuit variant. Trekkers not acclimatized struggle.

Skipping the rest day at Kambachen on the north route. The 1,300 m altitude gain from Kambachen to Pangpema in 36 hours without rest causes altitude sickness in 1 of 4 trekkers.

Booking a 12-day itinerary. Twelve days from Taplejung is too short for either route. Minimum 14 days for south, 16 days for north.

часто задаваемые вопросы

Какой маршрут лучше всего видны горы?

North has closer glacier contact and the iconic Kanchenjunga north face from Pangpema. South has the dramatic Jannu wall and the south face panorama. Both are excellent, with north slightly favored by photographers.

Can I combine south and north in one trek?

Yes, via the Sele La crossing at 4,290 m. The full circuit takes 22 to 28 days and costs USD 2,800 to USD 4,500. Book 4 months ahead.

Do I need a restricted-area permit for both?

Yes. The Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit costs USD 20 per person per week for the first 4 weeks. The Conservation Area Permit adds USD 30 and the TIMS Card adds USD 20.

Which is less crowded?

South sees roughly 350 trekkers per year. North sees roughly 600. Both are far quieter than EBC at 40,000 per year.

конспект

South is shorter, slightly easier, and focuses on the Jannu wall and Yalung glacier. North is higher, offers closer Kanchenjunga glacier contact, and is the foundation of the full circuit. Both cost USD 1,800 to USD 2,800 in 2027.

заключение

Choose south for a 14 to 18 day trip focused on the south face and Jannu wall. Choose north for a 16 to 20 day trip with higher altitude and closer glacier access. Choose the full circuit only if you have 22 to 28 days and clear weather windows for the Sele La and Lapsang La crossings.
