The lake is 5km long and 3km wide, surrounded by pristine pine, spruce, and juniper forest, and set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The helicopter lands at Rara for 1.5 hours, allowing time for lakeside exploration, photography, and optional short hikes. The lake is inside Rara National Park, which protects 51 species of mammals including musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and the rare red panda.
