역사
Gorkha was the small hill principality ruled by the Shah (Shahadeva) dynasty from 1559. King Prithvi Narayan Shah (1723–1775) ascended the throne in 1743 and embarked on a 25-year campaign to unify the fractious valley kingdoms into a single Nepal. He conquered Kathmandu in 1768, establishing the Shah dynasty that ruled Nepal until 2008. The Gorkha Durbar (palace) perches on a hilltop 1,700m above the town and houses the Kalika Temple where the kings worshipped before campaigns. The name “Gurkha” (the famous soldiers) derives from Gorkha.
The wildlife & national parks has been a corridor for trade, pilgrimage, and mountaineering for centuries. Gorkha has witnessed the evolution of Nepal’s trekking industry, from the early expeditions of the 1950s to the modern tea-house network that today supports thousands of trekkers each year.
Local traditions reflect the deep cultural heritage of the Himalayan peoples, including the Gurung, Magar, Brahmin, Chhetri. Oral histories, monastery records, and oral traditions document centuries of settlement, religious practice, and adaptation to high-altitude life.
