Trek Overview
The Milke Danda trek follows a 25-kilometre ridgeline between the Arun and Tamur river systems in eastern Nepal, famous for hosting the world's densest concentration of rhododendron species. The ridge runs between 2,500 and 3,870 metres and offers continuous views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Everest on clear days. It is the best trek in Nepal for botanists and spring visitors who want the rhododendron bloom without the crowds of the Annapurna or Everest regions.
Why Visit
Milke Danda has 28 of Nepal's 30 rhododendron species, more than any other trekking area, and the spring bloom in April and May turns the ridge into a wall of red, pink, and white. The ridge-top position gives you sunrise and sunset views of three 8,000-metre peaks (Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Everest) from a single viewpoint. The trek is also culturally rich, with Limbu and Rai villages along the approach and almost no other trekkers on the trail.
Best Time to Trek
Spring (March to May) is the peak season because of the rhododendron bloom, which peaks in mid-April at 3,000 metres. Autumn (October to November) is the second choice, with clearer mountain views but no flowers. Winter is cold but walkable, while monsoon (June to September) brings leeches, mud, and clouded views. For 2027 and 2028, book the April window by December of the previous year because lodge space on the ridge is very limited.
Difficulty Level
Rated Moderate. The trail follows a ridge, so there is sustained up-and-down but no single brutal climb. Days are five to seven hours of walking on well-defined trails. Suitable for fit first-time trekkers and active families with older children.
Duration
Most groups complete the trek in 10 to 14 days including flights and road transfers, with 12 days the comfortable average. Add two days in Kathmandu on either side.
Route Details
The standard route starts at Tumlingtar, the airstrip for the Makalu region. From Tumlingtar you climb through Limbu and Rai villages to Basantapur, then follow the Milke Danda ridge north through Chauki, Gupha Pokhari, and Milke Danda itself at 3,870 metres. From the high point you descend either back to Tumlingtar or east to Basantapur for the road exit. The ridge itself is the highlight: 25 kilometres of open walking with mountain views on both sides and rhododendron forest below.

최대 고도
The high point is Milke Danda at 3,870 metres (12,697 feet), with an optional day hike to the Jaljale Himal viewpoint at around 4,500 metres. Acclimatise on the ridge before any higher excursion.
Weather
Daytime temperatures on the ridge range from 8 to 18 degrees Celsius in spring and autumn, with nights dropping close to freezing. Spring mornings are usually clear, with cloud building by afternoon. Carry a three-season sleeping bag and a warm jacket.
Accommodation
Basic tea houses and homestays exist at Chauki, Gupha Pokhari, and along the ridge. Standards are very simple, with shared squat toilets and bucket showers. Some groups choose to camp for reliability and cleanliness.
Tea Houses
Tea houses are family-run and serve the standard dal bhat, momos, and noodles menu. The dining room is heated in the evening. Bring your own sleeping bag and a sleeping bag liner for hygiene.
캠핑
Camping is recommended because lodge space is limited and standards vary. Your agency supplies tents, dining gear, and a cook. Camping also lets you stop at the best viewpoints rather than the nearest village.
Food
Eat dal bhat for sustained energy. The Limbu and Rai villages serve local dishes including wachipa (a meat and rice dish) and tongba (fermented millet drink). Carry energy bars and electrolyte powder from Kathmandu.
Drinking Water
Treat tap and stream water with a filter or SteriPen. Boiled water is available at every lodge for about $1 per litre. The ridge has good springs but they should still be filtered.
전기
Some villages have grid or solar power. Charging fees run $1 to $3 per device. Carry a 10,000 mAh power bank for the ridge section.
Internet & Mobile Network
Ncell works intermittently in the larger villages like Basantapur and Chainpur. Signal on the ridge itself is patchy. A satellite messenger is recommended for safety.
수송
Fly Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (40 minutes), then drive to Basantapur (about 5 hours by jeep). Some groups start walking directly from Tumlingtar. Build in one buffer day for flight delays.
Required Permits
You need the Makalu Barun National Park Permit ($30) and the TIMS Card ($20). Some sections also touch the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, in which case the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit ($25) is required.

Photography Tips
The ridge-top position gives you sunrise light on Kanchenjunga to the east and sunset light on Makalu and Everest to the west. Bring a macro lens for the rhododendron close-ups in April and May. Gupha Pokhari, a small sacred lake, makes a strong foreground for mountain shots.
Wildlife
The rhododendron forests host red panda, though sightings are rare. Birdlife is exceptional, with blood pheasant, satyr tragopan, and several species of sunbird feeding on rhododendron nectar during the bloom. Keep distance from wildlife and never feed animals.
Flora
This is the main reason to come: 28 rhododendron species, from the deep red R. arboreum to the pale pink R. barbatum and the rare white R. cowanianii. Lower elevations also have magnolia, oak, and maple; the ridge itself has alpine meadow with primulas and gentians.
Local Culture
Lower valleys are Limbu and Rai country with their own languages, shamanic traditions, and the fermented millet drink tongba. The ridge itself is sparsely populated, with seasonal herder camps. Chainpur on the exit is a small market town with mixed Limbu, Rai, and Brahmin population.
Local Villages
Key stops include Tumlingtar, the regional airstrip; Basantapur, a road-head market town; Chauki, a small ridge-top village; Gupha Pokhari, with its sacred lake; and Chainpur, the historical bazaar of Sankhuwasabha district.
Safety Tips
- Carry a basic first-aid kit with Diamox for the ridge altitude.
- Treat all drinking water, even at lodges.
- Stay on the ridge trail in fog; side paths lead to grazing camps.
- Watch for leeches in spring if it has rained.
- Tell your guide if you feel unwell on the ridge.
Altitude Sickness Guide
At 3,870 metres the risk is low but real, especially if you arrive from sea level. Mild headaches are common on the first night at altitude. Drink three to four litres of water, avoid alcohol, and descend if symptoms persist or worsen.
Emergency Contacts
Nearest hospital with surgery capacity is in Dharan or Biratnagar, a day's drive from Tumlingtar. Himalayan Rescue Association: +977 1 4440292. Your insurance should cover helicopter rescue above 3,500 metres.
Responsible Tourism
Stay in local homestays and tea houses so the Limbu and Rai communities benefit. Do not pick rhododendron flowers or damage plants; the ridge is a fragile botanical reserve. Carry out all rubbish including toilet paper. Tip your crew in Nepali rupees.

결론
The Milke Danda trek is the best spring trek in eastern Nepal and we recommend it for botanists, photographers, and anyone who wants the rhododendron bloom without the crowds of the standard routes. It pairs naturally with the Makalu Base Camp trek or the Arun Valley trek for a longer eastern Nepal itinerary. Book the April 2027 window by December 2026 because lodge space on the ridge is very limited.
