Kathmandu Durbar Square was the royal palace of the Malla kings of Kantipur from at least the 10th century. The Taleju Temple (1549 AD) was built by King Mahendra Malla. The Shah kings continued to use the palace (Hanuman Dhoka) until 1908. The Kumari tradition, in which a young Newar girl is selected as the living embodiment of the goddess Taleju, dates to the 17th century. The 2015 earthquake severely damaged many structures including the trailokiya mohan narayan temple; restoration is ongoing. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1979.
