Trek Overview
The Khopra Ridge Trek trades the crowds of Poon Hill for a quiet community-run ridge above the Kali Gandaki gorge. The trail climbs from Nayapul through Gurung and Magar villages, oak and rhododendron forest, and open alpine pasture to a 3,660-metre ridge with a single community lodge. An optional side trip to sacred Kaire Lake at 4,500 metres adds a true high-altitude element if you have an extra day. Most trekkers finish in 7 to 11 days and rarely share the trail with more than a handful of others.
Why Visit
You come here for the silence, the panorama, and the community model. From the ridge you see Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and the Nilgiri peaks lined up across the gorge with no one jostling for the view. The lodge is owned and run by local families, and your bed fee funds schools and health posts in the surrounding villages. It is the Annapurna trek we send photographers and couples to when they want to slow down.
Best Time to Trek
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the clearest seasons, with stable weather and the best mountain visibility. Winter (December to February) is cold but workable, and we have run January trips with crisp, empty trails and frost on the rhododendrons. Summer monsoon (June to August) brings leeches and cloud, and we do not recommend it. Plan for 2027 or 2028 spring departures now, as community lodge beds are limited and book out early.
Difficulty Level
We rate this trek Moderate. You walk 5 to 7 hours a day on well-built stone steps and forest trail, with one long climb up to the ridge. No technical skills or ropes are needed. The challenge is the altitude gain from Nayapul at 1,070 metres to Khopra at 3,660 metres, so we build in acclimatisation days. A reasonably fit walker who hikes weekly at home will manage this comfortably.
Duration
Plan 7 to 11 days door to door from Pokhara. The shorter 7-day version skips the Kaire Lake side trip and focuses on the ridge. The 11-day version adds Kaire Lake and an extra acclimatisation day in Chistibung. We recommend 9 days for most clients as the sweet spot between comfort and trail time.
Route Details
The standard route starts at Nayapul, climbs to Ghandruk and Tadapani, then branches away from the main trail to Bayeli and the community lodge at Chistibung. From there you climb to Khopra Ridge, with an optional long day hike to Kaire Lake. The descent drops to Swanta and Ghorepani, where you can add a Poon Hill sunrise if you wish. You finish back at Nayapul by jeep.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: drive Pokhara to Nayapul, trek to Ghandruk. Day 2: Ghandruk to Tadapani. Day 3: Tadapani to Bayeli. Day 4: Bayeli to Chistibung. Day 5: Chistibung to Khopra Ridge, acclimatise. Day 6: side trip to Kaire Lake and back. Day 7: Khopra to Swanta. Day 8: Swanta to Ghorepani. Day 9: sunrise at Poon Hill, descend to Nayapul, drive to Pokhara. Shorter itineraries merge days 5 and 6 or skip Kaire Lake.
최대 고도
The high point of the standard trek is Khopra Ridge at 3,660 metres (12,008 feet). If you add the Kaire Lake side trip, you reach 4,500 metres (14,764 feet) for a few hours. We treat the Kaire day as a long day hike from the ridge rather than a sleep, which keeps your night altitude safer. The sleep altitude at Khopra is well within the range where most bodies acclimatise without issue.
Weather
Expect daytime highs of 10 to 18 degrees Celsius on the ridge in spring and autumn, dropping to minus 5 at night. Winter nights fall to minus 10 with snow possible on the upper trail. Mornings are usually clear, with cloud building after lunch. Carry a warm down jacket and a four-season sleeping bag even in autumn.
Accommodation
Most nights you sleep in family-run tea houses with twin beds, foam mattresses, and shared squat toilets. At Khopra Ridge you stay at the community lodge, which has dorm-style rooms and a communal dining hall with a yak-dung stove. The lodge is clean, simple, and warm once the stove is lit. Bring your own sleeping bag rated to minus 10 Celsius.
Tea Houses
Tea houses on the lower trail are basic but well-run, with solar lighting in the dining room and charging for a small fee. The community lodge at Khopra has flush toilets, a real dining hall, and arguably the best food on the route. Hot showers are rare above 2,500 metres, so plan for a wash-basin routine. Bed rates run $5 to $8 if you eat dinner at the same lodge.
캠핑
This trek uses tea-house lodging; camping is not typically required.
Food
Expect dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and seasonal vegetables) twice a day, with eggs, potatoes, and noodles as alternatives. The community lodge at Khopra also serves apple crumble and locally grown buckwheat pancakes. Carry snacks from Pokhara, as the trail shops thin out above Tadapani. Vegetarians eat well here, and vegans can be catered for with notice.
Drinking Water
Tap and stream water is available throughout, but you must treat it. We carry a SteriPen or iodine tablets and recommend a backup filter. Boiled water is sold at tea houses for $1 to $2 per litre. Plan for 3 to 4 litres a day on the climb to Khopra.
전기
Lower villages have grid power; above Tadapani most lodges run on small solar setups. Charging a phone or camera battery costs $2 to $4 per device. Bring a 10,000 mAh power bank for the upper section. The community lodge has a small solar system that runs lights but not always charging.
Internet & Mobile Network
Nepal Telecom and Ncell SIM cards work intermittently up to Tadapani, then drop out above. The community lodge has no Wi-Fi. Buy a data pack in Pokhara and download maps and music before you start. Treat this as a digital detox trek for the upper half.
수송
From Pokhara, a private jeep to Nayapul takes 90 minutes and costs $35 to $50. Public buses run for $2 but take three hours and are crowded. We arrange private 4WD transfers for all our groups. The return jeep from Nayapul to Pokhara is the same in reverse.
Required Permits
You need two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) at about $30 and the TIMS Card at $20. We arrange both in Pokhara or Kathmandu before departure. Bring four passport photos and your passport. No restricted-area permit is needed for this route.
포장 목록
Pack a four-season sleeping bag, a down jacket, and three layers of trekking clothing. Sturdy waterproof boots with good ankle support are essential for the stone steps. Carry a 30-litre day pack, trekking poles, a headlamp, and a basic first-aid kit. We provide a full packing checklist on booking.
Budget Guide
Below is a rough per-person budget for a 9-day Khopra Ridge trek in 2027, assuming a small group with guide and porter.
| 항목 | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Guide (9 days) | $250-315 |
| Porter (9 days) | $135-180 |
| Tea-house lodging | $45-72 |
| 경음지 | $135-225 |
| 허가 | $50 |
| Transport (round trip) | $50-80 |
| Total (9 days) | $665-922 |
Most clients land around $800 to $1,000 per person plus international flights. Solo trekkers pay more for the guide and porter.
Photography Tips
Shoot the sunrise from the ridge itself, not from the lodge, and use a tripod for the pre-dawn blue hour. A 24-70mm lens covers most of the panorama, but pack a wide-angle for the Kaire Lake day. Include a person in the frame for scale on the open pasture. Polarising filters help cut glare off the snow on Dhaulagiri.
Wildlife
The forest above Tadapani holds Assamese macaques, langurs, and occasionally barking deer. Bird life is excellent, with Kalij pheasants and blood pheasants on the upper trail. You may see Himalayan tahr near Kaire Lake in early autumn. Keep distance, and never feed the animals.
Flora
Lower sections are dense oak and rhododendron, which flower pink and red in March and April. Above 3,000 metres the forest opens to juniper, birch, and alpine meadow. Look for blue poppies near Kaire Lake in late spring. The ridge itself is short grass and shrub, kept open by grazing.
Local Culture
The trail crosses Gurung and Magar villages, both of whom served heavily in the Gurkha regiments. Hinduism and Buddhism mix here, with prayer flags alongside small shrines. Many families still farm terraces of millet, buckwheat, and maize. Greet elders with a polite namaste and ask before photographing people.
Local Villages
Ghandruk is the largest village on the route, with a Gurung museum and stone houses. Tadapani is a tiny cluster of lodges in deep forest. Swanta and Chistibung are small farming hamlets with a handful of families. Each village has its own dialect and headman, and the community lodge system rotates staff between them.
Safety Tips
Carry a tested first-aid kit including diamox, ibuprofen, and rehydration salts. Trek with a licensed guide who knows the weather signs. Do not push past symptoms of altitude sickness; descend if you have a headache that does not respond to fluids. Register your route with your embassy or trekking agency before departure.
Altitude Sickness Guide
You sleep at 3,660 metres on Khopra, high enough for mild acute mountain sickness (AMS). Symptoms include headache, nausea, and poor sleep. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, avoid alcohol, and consider diamox 125mg twice daily from Nayapul. If symptoms worsen or you get breathless at rest, descend immediately to Swanta or lower.
Emergency Contacts
Keep these numbers on paper and on your phone: local police 100, tourist police in Kathmandu 4216330, and Himalayan Rescue Association clinic in Manang. Your travel insurance must cover helicopter evacuation above 4,000 metres. Carry your insurance policy number and emergency phone in your day pack. Our guides carry a satellite phone for the upper section.
Responsible Tourism
Staying at the community lodge directly funds the local school and health post. Carry out all rubbish, including wrappers and batteries. Refill water bottles rather than buying plastic. Respect the no-firewood rule above 3,000 metres; lodges use yak dung and kerosene. Tip guides and porters fairly, around 10 percent of the trek cost.

요약
The Khopra Ridge Trek is the Annapurna route we recommend when you want mountain grandeur without the crowds. It is moderate, short enough for a 9-day trip, and supports local communities directly. The optional Kaire Lake day gives you a 4,500-metre high point without a pass crossing. Spring and autumn are the seasons to aim for.
결론
If you have done the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek and want the next step, or if you simply want a quiet Annapurna trek with real views, Khopra is the answer. Book early for 2027 and 2028 spring departures, as the community lodge only has about 20 beds. Pack warm, trek slowly, and let the ridge do the talking.
