The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is an 11-day moderate trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin surrounded by some of the world’s highest mountains including Annapurna I (8,091m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna. The trek begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, then climbs through Gurung villages, rhododendron forest, and terraced hillsides to reach the sanctuary at 4,130m. Unlike the Everest Base Camp trek, the Annapurna Base Camp trek reaches a higher altitude (4,130m vs 5,364m) but with easier walking days and a more gradual altitude profile. The sanctuary itself is considered sacred by the Gurung people, who prohibited the killing of animals within its boundaries – a tradition that continues today. The trek offers an incredible combination of mountain grandeur, cultural immersion, and accessible walking.
