Ama Dablam at 6,812 m is a realistic first technical Himalayan climb for alpine climbers who already lead 5.9 rock, climb WI3 water ice, and have done at least one D+ alpine route. The 28 to 32 day expedition includes a 10 day trek in, fixed line jumaring on the SW Ridge, two technical cruxes at the Yellow Tower 6,000 m and the Dablam ice traverse, and a summit day from Camp 3 at 6,300 m. Ama Dablam rises 6,812 m in the Khumbu, 12 km south of Everest. The standard SW Ridge route was first climbed in 1961 by Mike Gill, Barry Bishop, Mike Ward and Wally Romanes. The route has 4 camps above Base Camp at 4,570 m: Camp 1 at 5,705 m, Camp 2 at 6,009 m on the Yellow Tower ledge, Camp 3 at 6,300 m, and the summit at 6,812 m.<\/p>\n

Four factors decide whether Ama Dablam is realistic as a first technical Himalayan climb. First, prior alpine leading: climbers comfortable leading 5.9 rock and WI3 ice in mountains will manage the SW Ridge jumaring well. Second, altitude experience: at least one prior 6,000 m peak or trek to 5,500 m reduces acclimatization risk. Third, jumar fitness: the summit push involves 8 to 12 hours of jumaring fixed lines, demanding upper body endurance. Fourth, expedition length tolerance: 30 days away from home, including 14 days at or above 5,000 m, suits some climbers and not others.<\/p>\n

Season also affects realism. The autumn October to November window is the most popular and most crowded, with up to 25 teams on the mountain. The spring April to May window sees fewer teams but warmer snow conditions and higher avalanche risk on the Dablam traverse.<\/p>\n
