Renjo La Pass Trek – Complete 2027 Guide

Lama Feb 27, 2025 11 min read

Trek Overview

Sunrise from the Renjo La Pass frames Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu above the turquoise Gokyo lakes in a single composition that many trekkers rank above Kala Patthar. The Renjo La Pass Trek crosses the 5,360-metre pass from the Gokyo Valley into the remote Bhote Kosi valley via the village of Marulung, completing a quieter loop than the standard EBC trail. Over 14 to 17 days you cover 110 kilometres of tea-house walking, including two nights at Gokyo for proper acclimatisation. The descent into the Marulung side offers a more Tibetan-influenced side of the Everest region that few trekkers ever see.

Why Visit

You come here for the single best sunrise composition in the Khumbu, with four of the world's six highest peaks visible from one pass at dawn. The Renjo La is widely regarded as the most photogenic of the three Khumbu high passes because the lakes sit in the foreground of the mountain panorama. The descent into the Bhote Kosi valley gives a culturally Tibetan side of the Everest region that is dramatically quieter than the main trail. Compared with the Three Passes Trek, this is the focused version for trekkers who want the Renjo La without committing to all three passes.

Best Time to Trek

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) are the only safe windows for the Renjo La crossing because the pass becomes dangerous in snow. Autumn gives the clearest skies and the most stable weather, with sunrise on the pass reliably clear in October and November. Spring is warmer and brings the rhododendron bloom below Namche, but afternoon clouds can spoil the sunrise view. We do not recommend this trek in winter because the pass can be closed for days by snow.

Difficulty Level

We rate the Renjo La Pass Trek as Strenuous because of the single 5,360-metre pass crossing and the two high-altitude nights at Gokyo. There is no technical climbing and no glacier travel, but the pass day is a 6 to 8 hour walk at extreme altitude. The Renjo La is steep on both sides, with a long climb from Gokyo and a long descent into the Bhote Kosi valley. Fit trekkers with previous 4,500-metre experience can complete it with proper acclimatisation.

Duration

The standard itinerary runs 14 to 17 days from Lukla, with the longer end including the side trip to the fifth lake and the Gokyo Ri summit. We recommend 15 days as the safe minimum, which gives two nights at Gokyo for acclimatisation before the pass crossing. Shorter 13-day versions exist but they cut the second Gokyo night, which we do not recommend. Add two days for Kathmandu logistics, and your full trip length is 16 to 18 days.

Route Details

The trail follows the Gokyo route from Lukla to Namche, then west through Mong La, Dole, and Machhermo to Gokyo village beside the third lake. After two acclimatisation nights at Gokyo, you climb to the Renjo La at 5,360 metres for sunrise, then descend the long northern side into the Bhote Kosi valley at Marulung. From Marulung the route continues through Lungden and Thame back to Namche, completing a quiet loop. The return to Lukla follows the standard Dudh Kosi trail.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Fly to Lukla, trek to Phakding. Day 2: Climb to Namche. Day 3: Acclimatisation in Namche. Day 4: Trek to Dole via Mong La. Day 5: Trek to Machhermo. Day 6: Trek to Gokyo. Day 7: Gokyo Ri and third lake. Day 8: Second acclimatisation day at Gokyo. Day 9: Pre-dawn climb to Renjo La, descend to Marulung. Day 10: Trek to Lungden. Day 11: Trek to Thame. Day 12: Trek to Namche. Days 13 to 14: Descend to Lukla. Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu with buffer day.

Maximum Altitude

The high point is the Renjo La at 5,360 metres (17,585 feet), reached on day 9 after a 4-hour pre-dawn climb from Gokyo. Gokyo village sits at 4,790 metres, so you spend two consecutive nights above 4,700 metres before the pass crossing. The Renjo La summit itself is just a brief stop, with the long descent to Marulung at 4,200 metres the main challenge of the day. Oxygen levels at the pass are roughly 55 percent of sea level.

Weather

Autumn gives the most reliable sunrise on the Renjo La, with clear skies and cold mornings in October and November. Spring is warmer but cloudier in the afternoons, and the pass summit can be in cloud by 9 am. Night temperatures at Gokyo fall to minus 10 to minus 15 degrees Celsius even in peak season. Wind on the pass at dawn is severe, so a windproof shell, balaclava, and warm gloves are essential.

Accommodation

Tea-house lodges run the full route, with the Gokyo lodges being the most basic and the Thame and Lungden lodges more traditional. Rooms cost $3 to $10 per night on the standard plan, with food purchased at the same lodge. The Marulung lodge is small and basic, with just two tea houses serving the few trekkers who cross the pass. We recommend booking the Gokyo and Marulung lodges ahead through your guide in peak season.

Tea Houses

The tea houses on the Bhote Kosi side at Marulung and Lungden are smaller and more traditional than those on the main EBC trail. The dining room is the only heated space, and bedrooms are unheated with thin foam mattresses. Blankets are provided but a minus 20 degree Celsius sleeping bag is mandatory for the two Gokyo nights and the Marulung night. The host families speak less English than on the main trail, which gives a more authentically Sherpa experience.

Camping

This trek uses tea-house lodging; camping is not typically required. The Marulung tea houses are small enough that some groups carry a backup tent in case of overflow in peak season, but this is rare.

Food

The menu on the Gokyo side matches the standard Khumbu fare of dal bhat, momos, chow mein, and porridge. On the Bhote Kosi side at Marulung and Lungden the menu is shorter and more local, with tsampa (roasted barley flour), Sherpa stew, and yak cheese more common. Dal bhat remains the value choice with unlimited refills. Carry energy bars for the long Renjo La crossing day, because there is no lodge between Gokyo and Marulung.

Drinking Water

Boiled water is sold at every lodge for $1 to $5 per litre depending on altitude, and a UV pen or filter bottle pays for itself within the first week. Stream water above 4,000 metres is generally clean enough to treat with UV or chlorine drops. We recommend against bottled water because of the waste problem in the national park. Plan for four litres per day on the Renjo La crossing day, more than on a standard walking day.

Electricity

Hydroelectric power runs to Namche, with solar power on the more remote sections. Charging fees run from $3 to $6 per device, and the Marulung lodge may not offer charging at all. Carry two power banks, a 10,000 mAh for daily use and a 20,000 mAh backup for the high-section days. Keep all batteries inside your sleeping bag at night because cold drains them fast.

Internet & Mobile Network

Everest Link Wi-Fi is available at most lodges from Lukla to Gokyo, with cards sold in Namche. The signal disappears on the Bhote Kosi side at Marulung and Lungden, so plan for offline use during this section. Ncell and NTC mobile signal is patchy above Namche and unreliable on the high sections. We recommend a satellite messenger like a Garmin inReach for safety on this route.

Transportation

The trek starts and ends at the Lukla airstrip, a 35-minute Twin Otter flight from Kathmandu. Weather delays are routine in both seasons and we always build a buffer day. Helicopter return from Lukla to Kathmandu is available for $500 to $600 per seat when flights are cancelled. The trail itself is walking only, with no road access above Lukla.

Required Permits

You need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit, and the TIMS Card, the same set as the main EBC trek. Permits cost roughly $50 combined and can be issued in Kathmandu or at the Monjo checkpoint. The same permits cover the entire Renjo La loop. Your guide or agency will normally arrange everything before you fly to Lukla.

Packing List

Pack for serious cold and wind, a minus 20 degree Celsius sleeping bag, a down jacket, windproof shell, balaclava, thermal base layers, and two pairs of gloves. Trekking poles are essential for the steep descent from the Renjo La into the Bhote Kosi valley. Carry a headlamp with spare batteries for the pre-dawn pass climb, a basic first aid kit with Diamox, and a satellite messenger. A 30-litre daypack plus a duffel for the porter is the standard configuration.

Budget Guide

Costs sit between the Gokyo Lakes Trek and the Three Passes Trek, with the longer duration the main driver. The table below shows typical 2027 ranges for a 15-day trek.

ItemBudget Range (USD)
Guide and porter (full trek)$500 to $850
Lukla flights (round trip)$360 to $450
Permits and TIMS$50 to $60
Accommodation (15 nights)$60 to $250
Food and drinks$350 to $550
Gear rental in Kathmandu$60 to $180
Total per person$1,500 to $2,700

Photography Tips

The Renjo La at sunrise is the photographic goal of this trek, so arrive 30 minutes before dawn and shoot wide for the lake-and-mountain composition. The foreground turquoise lakes and the prayer flags at the summit add layers to the standard Everest silhouette. The descent into the Bhote Kosi valley gives a different, more Tibetan landscape of high pastures, yaks, and stone walls. Carry a telephoto for compressed shots of yaks and herders on the Bhote Kosi side.

Wildlife

The Bhote Kosi side of the route is excellent habitat for blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, and the lammergeier, all regularly seen above Lungden. The Renjo La approach has snowcock and Himalayan griffon vultures, and the lakes around Gokyo support migratory waterfowl. Musk deer appear at dawn near the birch forest at Dole and Lungden. Snow leopard is present but very rarely seen, with most sightings in winter on the Bhote Kosi side.

Flora

The lower trail passes through pine, fir, birch, and rhododendron forest, with peak bloom in April. Above Dole the forest thins into juniper scrub and alpine meadow with gentians, primula, and edelweiss. The Bhote Kosi side is drier, with high-altitude steppe and cushion plants, reflecting its rain-shadow position. Blue poppy can be spotted on the Gokyo Ri climb in late spring.

Local Culture

The Bhote Kosi valley has strong Tibetan influence, with trade routes crossing into Tibet through the Nangpa La for centuries. The villagers at Lungden and Marulung speak Tibetan-influenced Sherpa dialects and maintain trade ties with families across the border. Thame Monastery, perched above the valley, is one of the oldest in the Khumbu and hosts the Mani Rimdu masked dances in spring. We recommend a side visit to Thame Monastery on the return leg.

Local Villages

Thame is one of the oldest Sherpa villages in the Khumbu, with a 17th-century monastery and traditional stone houses. Lungden and Marulung are small Bhote Kosi trading villages with a strong Tibetan flavour, where you see yaks and trading caravans. Gokyo is a seasonal settlement of just six lodges beside the third lake. Namche Bazaar is the main hub of the route, with bakeries, gear shops, and the famous Saturday market.

Safety Tips

Weather on the Renjo La can change in 30 minutes, so check conditions with your guide the night before and turn back if snow is falling. The descent into the Bhote Kosi valley is long and steep, so trekking poles and a slow pace are essential. Never cross the pass alone, and brief your guide on any medical conditions before leaving Kathmandu. Helicopter rescue insurance is mandatory, and we recommend a satellite messenger because mobile signal is unreliable on the Bhote Kosi side.

Altitude Sickness Guide

The Renjo La crossing at 5,360 metres is the single biggest altitude stressor on this trek, reached after two acclimatisation nights at Gokyo. We recommend a preventive Diamox dose of 125 mg twice daily from Namche onward, with an extra dose on the pass morning. Symptoms to watch for are severe headache, vomiting, loss of coordination, and fluid in the lungs. If anyone in your group shows severe symptoms, descend immediately rather than attempting the pass.

Emergency Contacts

The Himalayan Rescue Association clinic at Pheriche is the closest Western-style medical post, a long day's walk from Marulung. Helicopter rescue is available through Fishtail Air, Saga Rescue, and Simrik Air, all on 24-hour call from Kathmandu. Keep your insurance policy number, rescue contact, and passport copy with your guide at all times. The tourist police in Kathmandu can be reached at 1144, and the Solukhumbu district police at 100.

Responsible Tourism

The Bhote Kosi side of the route has less waste infrastructure than the main EBC trail, so pack out all plastic, batteries, and sanitary waste. Tip your porter and guide fairly, with $6 per day per porter and $11 per day per guide being a reasonable minimum for this trek. Use boiled or filtered water rather than buying bottled. Respect monastery etiquette at Thame and remove shoes before entering prayer halls.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions we hear most often from trekkers planning the Renjo La Pass Trek, with answers reflecting current trail conditions for 2027 to 2030.

Summary

The Renjo La Pass Trek is the focused version of the Three Passes Trek for trekkers who want the single best sunrise in the Khumbu without committing to all three passes. With 14 to 17 days on the trail and a budget of $1,500 to $2,700, it is a serious undertaking that rewards experienced trekkers with the most photogenic pass in the Everest region. The Bhote Kosi side offers a culturally Tibetan corner of the Khumbu that few trekkers see. We rank it as the best choice for trekkers who want one big pass crossing combined with the Gokyo lakes.

Conclusion

Standing on the Renjo La at sunrise, with Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu above the turquoise Gokyo lakes, you understand why this pass has such a loyal following among serious Khumbu trekkers. The Renjo La Pass Trek delivers the single best photographic moment in the Everest region and a culturally rich descent into the Bhote Kosi valley, all on a manageable 15-day itinerary. Plan ahead, acclimatise properly, and treat the pass with the respect its altitude deserves. Book 2027 and 2028 dates early because the Marulung lodges fill up fast in peak season.
