Api Nampa Trek – Complete 2027 Guide

Lama Apr 1, 2025 8 min read

Trek Overview

The Api Nampa Trek explores the Api Nampa Conservation Area, Nepal's westernmost protected area, covering 1,903 square kilometres between the Indian border and the Tibetan plateau. The route visits both Api and Nampa base camps, with views of two named 7,000-metre peaks and the traditional Byans valley villages. It is a less intense alternative to the full Api Base Camp Trek, with a slightly shorter duration and lower average altitude.

Why Visit

You come here for the rare twin-peak views and the cultural depth of the Byans valley, where villages like Tinkar and Chhangru have traded with Tibet for centuries. The conservation area shelters snow leopard, blue sheep and Himalayan black bear. With almost no other trekkers on the trail, you get a genuine expedition feel without the crowds of better-known routes.

Best Time to Trek

Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are the only reliable windows. Cloud builds in summer and trails are snowbound in winter. The lower Mahakali valley gets monsoon rain in July and August. We recommend October 2027 or April 2028 for the clearest mountain views.

Difficulty Level

We rate the Api Nampa Trek as challenging. The trails are rough, the daily distances are long, and the altitude reaches 4,000 metres. You will need to camp for much of the route. Good fitness, prior trekking experience and tolerance for basic conditions are essential.

Duration

The standard route takes 12 to 16 days including the drive from Dhangadhi to Gokuleshwor. A 12-day version focuses on one base camp, while a 16-day version visits both Api and Nampa base camps. We suggest 14 days for a balanced pace with adequate acclimatisation.

Route Details

You drive from Dhangadhi to Gokuleshwor, then trek up the Mahakali valley through Makarighat and Seti to reach either Api base camp or Nampa base camp. A loop combining both base camps is possible but adds two days. The return reverses the same trail.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1 fly Kathmandu to Dhangadhi, Day 2 drive to Gokuleshwor, Days 3 to 6 trek through Makarighat and Seti, Days 7 to 9 reach Api base camp and explore, Days 10 to 12 retrace to Gokuleshwor, Day 13 drive to Dhangadhi, Day 14 fly to Kathmandu. A 16-day version adds the Nampa base camp loop.

Maximum Altitude

The highest point is around 4,000 metres at Api or Nampa base camp, with the highest overnight at about 3,600 metres. The altitude is high enough to require careful acclimatisation. Plan a rest day at Seti before pushing to either base camp.

Weather

Daytime temperatures in October are 10 to 16 degrees at lower altitudes and 0 to 5 degrees near base camp. Spring is warmer but cloudier. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms and humidity, and winter nights fall below minus 15 at base camp. Pack for serious cold above 3,500 metres.

Accommodation

Basic homestays and small lodges operate in the lower villages, but above Seti you will need to camp. The tea houses that exist are family homes with a spare room. There is no proper lodge infrastructure at the base camps. Bring a four-season tent and a minus-15-degree sleeping bag.

Tea Houses

Tea houses are very basic, often just a family home with a spare room and shared squat toilet. The menu is dal bhat, potatoes and Tibetan tea. Hot showers are essentially unavailable above Makarighat. Be prepared for very simple conditions and bring your own snacks.

Camping

Camping is essential for the upper sections of the Api Nampa Trek. You will need a full crew with cook, dining tent, sleeping tents and a toilet tent. Campsites are in village fields or beside the trail. A four-season tent and warm sleeping bag are non-negotiable for the cold nights above 3,500 metres.

Food

Your cook team prepares dal bhat, noodles, soup, porridge and pasta with seasonal vegetables. Local staples include buckwheat pancakes and yak cheese. Carry high-energy snacks and electrolyte powder because shops are non-existent above Makarighat. Bring a small thermos for hot drinks during the cold walking days.

Drinking Water

Water is plentiful from mountain streams but must be filtered, boiled or treated with tablets. Your cook team provides boiled water at every meal. Carry two litres of capacity for the long walking days. Avoid single-use plastic bottles because there is no recycling in the area.

Electricity

There is no grid electricity above Gokuleshwor. Solar chargers carried by your crew will keep essential devices running. Bring a high-capacity power bank and a backup headlamp. Cold nights drain batteries quickly, so keep them inside your sleeping bag.

Internet and Mobile Network

Mobile signal is unreliable in the lower valley and disappears entirely above Makarighat. A satellite phone or PLB is strongly recommended for emergencies. Plan to be offline for the entire upper trek and brief family before departure.

Transportation

You fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi (about 75 minutes), then drive two long days to Gokuleshwor on a winding mountain road. The road is rough and landslides can close it for days in summer. Some groups charter a STOL flight from Dhangadhi to Chainpur to save a day of driving. Build buffer days into your itinerary.

Required Permits

You need an Api Nampa Conservation Area Permit (about USD 30 for foreigners) and a TIMS Card. The conservation area fee funds snow leopard conservation and community projects. We arrange all permits in Kathmandu within one working day. For 2027 the fees are stable.

Packing List

Pack a minus-15-degree sleeping bag, four-season tent, sturdy waterproof boots, full layering system, sun protection, water filter, headlamp with spare batteries, first-aid kit including diamox, and a satellite phone or PLB. Trekking poles help on the river crossings. Bring a wide-brimmed sun hat for the high valleys.

Photography Tips

The twin peaks of Api and Nampa form a striking pair when viewed from the high ridges. A wide-angle lens captures the scale of both peaks, while a 70 to 200 mm lens compresses them against the foreground. Carry extra batteries and keep them warm overnight. The Byans valley villages and their flat-roofed houses are excellent cultural subjects, with permission.

Wildlife

The Api Nampa Conservation Area is snow leopard habitat, though sightings are extremely rare. You have a much better chance of seeing blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and bearded vultures. The lower forests hold leopard, barking deer and several pheasant species. Walk quietly in the early morning for the best encounters.

Flora

The lower Mahakali valley is covered in chir pine and broadleaf forest, transitioning to fir, birch and rhododendron above 2,500 metres. The high valleys have alpine meadows with blue poppy, gentian and primula in summer. Juniper and dwarf rhododendron cover the highest slopes near base camp. The area is a botanical transition zone between the Himalaya and the Tibetan plateau.

Local Culture

The Byans valley is home to Rung and Johari communities who have traded with Tibet for centuries. The culture is a mix of Hinduism and pre-Buddhist Bon traditions, with some Tibetan Buddhist influence in the upper villages. The Mahakali river is sacred and there are several temples along the route. Always ask before photographing people or religious sites.

Local Villages

Gokuleshwor is the gateway town on the Mahakali river, with basic lodges and shops. Tinkar and Chhangru are the main Byans valley villages, each with a few stone houses and an old monastery. The villages feel unchanged for centuries, with terraced fields and stacked firewood. Spend time at each village to learn about local life.

Safety Tips

Travel with a local crew who knows the route and the river crossings. Carry a satellite phone or PLB because there is no mobile signal. Pack a comprehensive first-aid kit including diamox for altitude and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Do not attempt river crossings in spate, wait for water levels to drop.

Altitude Sickness Guide

You will sleep above 3,500 metres for several nights and reach 4,000 metres at base camp. Ascend gradually from Gokuleshwor, take a rest day at Seti, and hydrate aggressively. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, fatigue and disturbed sleep. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen at night.

Emergency Contacts

The nearest health post is in Makarighat, with a basic clinic. The district hospital is in Darchula, a long day's drive away. Helicopter evacuation is possible but expensive and weather-dependent. Register your trek with your embassy and carry your insurance details.

Responsible Tourism

The Api Nampa Conservation Area is funded largely by trekking permit fees that support snow leopard conservation and community projects. Stay on marked trails, carry out all rubbish and do not disturb wildlife. Buy supplies from local shops and eat in village homes when invited. Dress modestly in villages and religious sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions we hear most often from trekkers planning the Api Nampa Trek, with answers based on the latest 2027 ground conditions.

Summary

The Api Nampa Trek is a challenging 12 to 16 day expedition through Nepal's westernmost conservation area, with twin-peak views and traditional Byans valley culture. With camping required, no mobile signal and very basic infrastructure, it is a true wilderness adventure for experienced trekkers. The rewards are rare mountain solitude, dramatic scenery and a sense of having reached the absolute edge of trekking Nepal.

Conclusion

If you have already done the popular treks and want something genuinely off the radar, the Api Nampa Trek should be on your shortlist. Combine it with the Api Base Camp Trek for a longer exploration, or pair it with the Saipal Base Camp Trek for a complete far-west circuit. Plan carefully, travel with a knowledgeable crew, and aim for October 2027 or April 2028 for the best conditions.
