역사

Suklaphanta was established as a wildlife reserve in 1976 and upgraded to a national park in 2017. The park protects the largest remaining extent of the alluvial grasslands that once covered the Terai. The swamp deer (barasingha) population here is the largest in the world. The park also has a small but significant Bengal tiger population and is a BirdLife International Important Bird Area with over 400 species, including the critically endangered Bengal florican. The Rana Tharu people indigenous to this area have a distinct culture from the Tharu of eastern Nepal.

The wildlife & national parks has been a corridor for trade, pilgrimage, and mountaineering for centuries. Suklaphanta National Park has witnessed the evolution of Nepal’s trekking industry, from the early expeditions of the 1950s to the modern tea-house network that today supports thousands of trekkers each year.

Local traditions reflect the deep cultural heritage of the Himalayan peoples, including the Tharu, Brahmin, Chhetri, Rana Tharu (distinct from eastern Tharu). Oral histories, monastery records, and oral traditions document centuries of settlement, religious practice, and adaptation to high-altitude life.
