Hiunchuli (6,441m / 21,132 ft) is a trekking peak in the Annapurna region of north-central Nepal, located at the eastern entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary. The peak lies at approximately 28 degrees 31 minutes north latitude and 83 degrees 50 minutes east longitude, in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Hiunchuli, along with Machhapuchhre (6,993m) to the north, forms the gate to the Annapurna Sanctuary, the high glacial basin at the heart of the Annapurna range. The Nepal Mountaineering Association classifies Hiunchuli as a Group A trekking peak.Hiunchuli was first climbed in October 1971 by an American expedition led by Craig Anderson, via the south-east face. Despite its moderate altitude, the peak is technically demanding due to its complex route-finding through vertical rock bands and unstable snow conditions on the upper mountain. The standard route climbs the south-east ridge, with Base Camp at approximately 4,600m in the Annapurna Sanctuary and a High Camp at around 5,200m. The summit push involves mixed climbing with 40-50 degree snow and ice slopes, plus some short rock steps. The technical difficulty is rated AD- on the Alpine grading system.Hiunchuli is for climbers with previous mountaineering experience, including mixed climbing and the ability to navigate complex terrain. The route-finding is notoriously difficult, and the upper mountain is prone to avalanches in certain snow conditions, requiring careful route selection by the climbing Sherpa. The rewards at the summit are exceptional: a 360-degree panorama including Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Gangapurna (7,454m), and the entire Annapurna Sanctuary below. The approach follows the classic Annapurna Sanctuary trek from Pokhara through Nayapul, chanda, chorron, and the Modi Khola gorge to Campamento base de Annapurna (4,130m). The region is culturally Gurung homeland, with traditional villages, ancient gompas, and the famous Gurung museum at Ghandruk. The best climbing seasons are spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November). Hiunchuli is significantly less crowded than other Annapurna peaks due to its technical nature and avalanche risk on the standard route.
